Blessed Are The Poor In Spirit

Matthew 5:3 | Blessed are the poor in Spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus starts the Beatitudes with a basic definition of citizenship in the Kingdom of God, and that is poverty in Spirit. At first, reading this sounds like the opposite of what we should want. Don't we want rich or abundant spirits? But being poor in Spirit doesn't mean lacking; it means being humble or dependent. If we come to God thinking we are a good catch, our pride will stand in the way of being blessed. But if we come to God realizing we are in desperate need of a Savior, we will find true contentment. Plus, it's from this position of humility that God can actually use us. Consider these words of Jesus in Matthew 23:12: "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."
